Birdaday Field Notes is a new, independent website launched in October 2026. It is not connected to the previous owner of the birdaday.net domain, to the original Bird-a-Day online challenge, or to its creator, the late Trey Mitchell. It is also not affiliated with the National Audubon Society, Tropical Audubon Society, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology or any other organization we cite.
What this site covers
- The Bird-a-Day challenge as a personal game: how it works, strategy, and a private streak tracker. It has no accounts, leaderboards or public forum.
- Backyard birding references: hummingbird feeders, a nectar calculator, bird food by species, common US backyard birds, identification basics and birdhouse dimensions.
How we write
Every fact, figure and recommendation on this site comes from a published source that we opened and read: mainly the Cornell Lab of Ornithology (All About Birds, NestWatch, Project FeederWatch, eBird), the National Audubon Society, the Smithsonian's National Zoo and nonprofit or public-agency guides. Each article ends with a linked Sources list. We don't publish invented tests, reviews or testimonials, and we don't claim first-hand experience we don't have. Where sources disagree, such as on how often to change hummingbird nectar, we show the range and say who recommends what.
What you won't find here
No ads, no affiliate links, no analytics, no sign-up forms and nothing for sale. The streak tracker stores data only in your own browser.
About the original Bird-a-Day site
For many years birdaday.net hosted an online Bird-a-Day competition where players logged a new species each day. Audubon magazine recommended it to readers, and Tropical Audubon Society credits Trey Mitchell, a Miami software developer and nature photographer who died in 2017, with creating it. We mention this history so that people following old links understand what changed. The original player data and profiles are not part of this site.
